「慣習」を意味する convention と custom の違いを教えてください。

convention「しきたり、慣習、慣行」

to defy convention「慣習を破る」
by convention「しきたりに従って」
follow convention「慣習に従う」
break with convention「古い慣習から抜け出す」

custom「習慣、風習、慣行、慣例」
例）
social customs「社会的慣習」
”It’s my custom to〜.”「〜するのが私の習慣です。」
”the custom in〜”「〜（場所・国・地域など）の慣習」
”according to the custom,”「その慣例に従って」

convention は custom よりも改まった堅い語で、convention は「伝統的に行われる習慣・しきたり」、customは「社会的な習慣」「歴史的な文化としての習慣・慣習」を意味します。
ちなみに、「個人的な習慣・癖」などを表す言葉は habit ですが、custom が使用されることもあります。

When visiting Tokyo, you should follow the convention of standing on the left side of the escalator.
東京を訪れる際は、エスカレーターの左側に立つという慣習に従わないといけない。

He dares not defy the convention.
彼は、その慣習を破る勇気が無い。
