diversityの語源を教えてください。: “diversity” はラテン語の “diverstias” が語源で現在の「多様」のほかに、主に矛盾や対立など違いを強調したものでした。
分解すると、”di” で「離れて」、”verse” で「方向」となります。
このニュアンスは17世紀になくなっており、今では一つの空間に様々な個性をもった人間または動物がいるということになります。
ちなみに、反対語の “universality” という言葉も似たようなもので、”uni” で「一つの」で、「一つの方向」、つまりは「同じ考え方」で、転じて「普遍性」となります。
