英語の質問をする

「figure out」と「understand」は同義語として使っていいのですか。: 「figure out」と「understand」はいずれも「理解する」と訳しますが、使い方は異なります。厳密に言えば、「figure out」は、自分の頭で考えた末に答えに到達する、という意味です。
したがって、”Figure it out.”なら、「自分の頭で考えて答えを見つけなさい」という和訳が適切です。

「understand」は理解しているという状態を表す動詞であるのに対し、「figure out」は自分で考えて答えを見出すという動作を表す動詞であり、両者の置き換えが可能な場合もあれば、そうでない場合もあります。
例えば、先ほどの “Figure it out.” のような命令文で understand に置き換えると、「それを理解している状態であれ」ということになり、不自然な文章になってしまいます。
